Who Needs a Boating License?
In Canada, any individual operating a motorized watercraft must possess a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or other proof of competency. This regulation still applies regardless of the type and size of powered watercraft. So if you are operating a 2hp outboard or a 100ft yacht you will need your boating license.
The PCOC never expires and is valid nationwide.
Fine for Operating a Vessel Without a Boating License
Operating a motorized watercraft without a boating license or valid proof of competency incurs a minimum fine of $250.
Boaters are required to carry their original PCOC on board at all times during operation. Note that a photocopy of the card isn't acceptable. In the event of an inspection by law enforcement, boaters must present their original PCOC.
Guidelines for Non-Residents Operating Watercraft in Canada
For non-residents operating a powered watercraft in Canada:
- If your stay in Canada is less than 45 consecutive days, carrying proof of competency on board is optional.
- For stays extending beyond 45 consecutive days, you must have proof of competency on board.
